Following the death of their son, Michael and Kathy Lee Gatto learned that the owner of the bar that their son, Michael, was killed in did not hold liquor liability insurance. That bar had more than 40 police incident reports filed against it within just the past year, but yet no actual liquor ordinance violations were filed against the bar or owner. Therefore, in addition to exposing the city of Statesboro’s lack of action and reporting on liquor ordinance violations, the Gattos also learned that bars and restaurants are not required by state law to carry liquor liability insurance.
